The African Development Bank has named Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as the African Champion for its $7 billion Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa (IATP).
In a statement released on Wednesday in Brazzaville, the bank said the appointment recognises Nigeria’s strong leadership and policy reforms aimed at revitalising the aviation sector.
As African Champion, Keyamo will lead advocacy and implementation efforts for the programme across the continent. The AfDB also invited him to its Annual Meeting scheduled for May 28, 2026, in Brazzaville, where Nigeria and the bank are expected to formally sign a Letter of Intent for the initiative.
The Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa is designed to modernise the continent’s aviation industry and attract private, institutional and concessional funding into the sector.
According to the bank, African airlines currently contribute less than three per cent of global air traffic, despite Africa accounting for almost 18 per cent of the world’s population.
The AfDB praised Keyamo’s dedication to aviation development and expressed confidence in his ability to help drive the programme throughout Africa.
The appointment comes as Nigeria continues reforms in its aviation industry, including upgrades to airport infrastructure, improved airline operations, investment attraction and efforts to position the country as a major regional aviation hub.
