Several Nigerian celebrities have voiced outrage over the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State, describing this year’s Children’s Day celebration as heartbreaking and painful.
Among those who reacted were Toke Makinwa, Paul Okoye, Ruth Kadiri, Patience Ozokwor, Mercy Eke, Tayo Sobola, Kehinde Bankole, and Chiwetalu Agu, all of whom took to social media to demand the safe return of the victims using the hashtag #BringBackOurStudents.
Reacting to the incident, Ruth Kadiri lamented the worsening insecurity in the country, saying fear and uncertainty had replaced the freedom Nigerians once enjoyed. She described the abduction of children as every parent’s nightmare and called for a better and safer Nigeria.
Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, summed up the mood by describing the celebration as an “unhappy Children’s Day,” while Toke Makinwa offered a brief prayer, writing, “On this Children’s Day… Dear God.”
Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor questioned how children could be targeted while the nation remained silent, urging Nigerians to seek change and pray for the victims’ safe return.
Reality TV star Mercy Eke also expressed concern, noting that children should be safe, happy, and free — not living in fear or captivity. She called on the government and security agencies to ensure the abducted students are rescued safely.
Tayo Sobola urged Nigerians to stay vigilant amid rising insecurity, warning that such incidents could happen to anyone.
Kehinde Bankole compared the latest abduction to the Chibok girls’ kidnapping, stressing that Nigerians could not genuinely celebrate Children’s Day while children continued to be taken. She called on the government to implement lasting solutions to insecurity.
Chiwetalu Agu also condemned the incidents, highlighting reports that more than 70 children and several adults were abducted in separate attacks in Borno and Oyo states. He questioned the government’s response and demanded urgent action to secure the release of the victims and improve national security.
