Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has successfully increased its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), surpassing its official nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd. The milestone was verified during a performance test conducted by the refinery’s process licensors, further cementing its position as the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery. The achievement highlights the refinery’s strong engineering design and operational efficiency.
Vice President of Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries, Devakumar Edwin, announced that the company plans to expand the facility’s processing capacity to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months. This expansion is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s energy security, eliminate reliance on imported petroleum products, and position the country as a major exporter of refined fuels.
Since commencing fuel production in 2024, the refinery has steadily ramped up output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other petroleum products. It currently supplies both the domestic market and several international destinations, including multiple African countries, as well as Europe (United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands). The refinery has also exported gasoline to the United States and jet fuel to Saudi Arabia. In April 2026, it was named the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel by S&P Global Commodities.
Aliko Dangote’s refinery aims to become a major refining hub for Africa and the global market. Future plans include increased production of industrial feedstocks such as LPG, polypropylene, and Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) for detergent and consumer goods manufacturing. The development is expected to create jobs, stimulate industrial growth, improve trade balances, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global energy sector.
