Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the Attorney-General to challenge in court the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s decision to freeze a state government account domiciled with First Bank.
The anti-graft agency placed a “Post No Debit” restriction on the account, which sources say is used for the payment of workers’ salaries. Adeleke described the move as a clear breach of the rule of law and demanded that EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede publicly explain the basis for the action and produce the evidence supporting it.
Addressing journalists at the Government House in Osogbo, the governor said the restriction and related measures against the state were undermining democratic norms. He urged Nigerians and residents of Osun to pay close attention to the development.
“All I ask is for the EFCC chairman to explain to the good people of Osun State and Nigerians in general why he froze the Osun State Government account and provide evidence to support whatever reason he presents,” Adeleke stated. “This and other actions being taken against Osun State are turning our democracy into a huge joke.”
The governor has instructed the Attorney-General to file the suit at the Federal High Court in Osogbo. As of the time of this report, the EFCC had not issued any public statement on the reasons for the restriction.
