Police Scotland is investigating reports that several foreign athletes failed to return home after competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The force confirmed it had received reports of athletes who were unaccounted for. Enquiries are under way, with early contact already made with the UK Home Office to establish the circumstances.
Uganda’s NBS Sport reported that four members of the country’s six-person boxing team went missing before their scheduled departure on Tuesday. One of the athletes reportedly told the broadcaster he intended to seek asylum.
Pakistan Today also reported that one Pakistani boxer failed to board the team’s return flight home on Tuesday.
Similar incidents have occurred at previous Commonwealth Games, particularly those hosted in Australia and Britain. After the 2018 Gold Coast Games, Australian authorities were still searching for 50 athletes and officials a month later, while another 190 had applied for asylum.
Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competed in the 11-day event, which concluded in Glasgow last Sunday.
