The Accord Party has formally appealed to the European Union to help de-escalate tensions in Osun State and support a peaceful, credible governorship election scheduled for Saturday.
In a letter dated 12 August 2026 and addressed to Gautier Migot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem described a deteriorating political atmosphere marked by violence, intimidation, harassment and selective enforcement actions.
According to the party, at least 29 people have been killed in incidents linked to the political situation in the state, with others injured. It further claimed that more than 60 of its members and supporters have been arrested and detained in Abuja and Nasarawa State. The letter also raised concerns about the timing and perceived selectivity of deployments by federal law-enforcement and regulatory agencies during the election period.
Mgbudem stressed that Accord is not opposed to legitimate investigations or lawful enforcement, but warned that actions appearing partial or inconsistent with due process risk undermining public confidence. He cited attacks and intimidation directed at party members, including a viral video in which Senator Francis Fadahunsi was alleged to have called for Accord supporters to be killed, an allegation the senator has previously denied.
The party urged the EU to use its diplomatic influence to encourage Nigerian authorities to ensure a level playing field for all contenders. It specifically requested a public reaffirmation of the need for a free, fair, transparent, credible and peaceful election decided solely by the will of the electorate. Mgbudem framed the appeal as preventive diplomacy, arguing that early international engagement could help prevent further escalation and reinforce peaceful, rule-of-law-based competition.
The letter positions the EU’s intervention as a means of supporting de-escalation and safeguarding democratic standards in the final days before the vote.
