A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has granted an interim injunction restraining the Imo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies and the chairmen of Ideato North and Ideato South Local Government Areas from interfering with the political and civic activities of Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere.
Justice K. Agunioye issued the ex parte order in Motion No. M/481/2026, arising from suit FCT/HC/CV/153/2026. The order bars the respondents and their agents from sealing, blocking or disrupting rallies, meetings, campaigns or processions organised by the lawmaker, who represents the Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, anywhere in Ideato or across Imo State.
The court also restrained the defendants from destroying, dismantling or removing billboards and signage installed by Ugochinyere, and from providing security cover for such actions. It further prohibited any breach of his rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and movement, including the right to publicise constituency projects and mobilise constituents.
The application was supported by an affidavit of extreme urgency and moved by counsel for the applicant. Defendants named in the suit include the Inspector-General of Police, the State Security Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Governor of Imo State, the Imo State Signage and Advertisement Agency, the Ideato local government chairmen, the state Commissioner of Police and the state Director of the SSS.
The court rejected a preliminary objection by the Imo State Government seeking to vacate the injunction. The protective orders remain in force pending determination of the substantive suit. Further hearing has been adjourned to November.
The orders followed concerns over alleged attempts to disrupt venues linked to Ugochinyere and his supporters, including activities of the Action Peoples Party. Legal observers described the ruling as an affirmation of constitutional guarantees of free expression, assembly and movement ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Ugochinyere has maintained that his constituency engagements constitute lawful exercises of his mandate.
