A customary court in Ibadan on Friday sentenced a 50-year-old woman to one year in a correctional centre for possessing and forging a marriage certificate she presented during divorce proceedings.
Mrs S.M. Akintayo, president of the Mapo Grade ‘A’ Customary Court, convicted Bolanle Adeyemo after she pleaded guilty. The judge imposed one-year terms on counts of unlawful possession and forgery, with an option of one month of community service on each count. Akintayo discharged Adeyemo on a separate conspiracy charge.
The case stemmed from a divorce petition filed on March 26 by her husband, Adeboye Adeyemo, 55. In an effort to prevent the dissolution of the marriage, Bolanle Adeyemo tendered what she claimed was a valid marriage certificate issued on September 12, 1996, by the Ibadan North Local Government registry.
Adeboye Adeyemo challenged the document’s authenticity. The court directed police to investigate. The probe established that the registry never issued any such certificate and that the document was forged.
Prosecutor Insp. Ayodele Ayeni told the court that the offences occurred at about 9 a.m. at Mapo, Ibadan, and violated sections 516, 465 and 430 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Laws of Oyo State 2000.
