The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for submitting memoranda and position papers by eight days.
Submissions, originally due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, will now close at 5 p.m. West Africa Time on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the extension in a statement. He said the extra time would allow stakeholders to prepare thorough contributions and ensure wider participation in shaping the proposed legislation.
The bill aims to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for a more effective policing system. It is designed to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges while incorporating safeguards for accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Gbajabiamila emphasised the importance of broad consultation, noting that the Working Group is committed to drawing on informed perspectives from Nigerians and relevant stakeholders. He encouraged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics, experts and members of the public to submit their views.
All memoranda and position papers must be submitted exclusively through the official portal, nationalpolicingbill.com, by the new deadline.
The Working Group highlighted several key issues under consideration, including sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency coordination, accountability mechanisms and protections against political interference or abuse.
At the end of its work, the group will produce a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for legislative processing.
The call for submissions was first announced on August 3, when Gbajabiamila stressed the need for public ownership of the reform process.
