The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has called for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of Orlu Local Government Area Chairman Chris Mbarie over remarks it describes as inciting and intended to intimidate opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement by its spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the party condemned comments attributed to Mbarie in a video circulating on social media. According to the PDP, the council chairman suggested that opposition parties would not be allowed to operate freely in Orlu LGA.
Obiaku said the language used raises serious concerns about public safety, electoral freedom, and the integrity of the democratic process. He urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the statement, its context, and intent, and to make arrests and prosecute if criminal culpability is established.
The PDP stressed that no public official, including a local government chairman or governor, has the constitutional authority to declare any part of the state a no-go area for opposition parties. Council areas, it said, belong to the people and not to any political party or office holder.
The party also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of a pattern of voter intimidation, citing alleged use of town criers during the last governorship election to discourage non-APC supporters from voting. It warned that such tactics would no longer be tolerated.
“We will document threats, report violations and pursue every lawful avenue to protect the people’s votes and democratic rights,” Obiaku said. The PDP called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations, the media, election observers, and the international community to closely monitor political activities in Orlu and other parts of Imo State ahead of 2027.
The party maintained that elections must be decided by the people through free participation, not through threats or intimidation.
