Newly inaugurated Nigerian Bar Association President Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, FCIArb, has named Dr. Babatunde Ajibade, SAN, to chair a committee tasked with overhauling the association’s election system.
Speaking at her inauguration, Badejo-Okusanya acknowledged the controversy surrounding the recent NBA elections and the technical problems that stopped some eligible members from voting. She firmly rejected claims that the results were manipulated or fixed in advance, stating that she had campaigned nationwide and earned the mandate she now holds.
She stressed that examining legitimate concerns openly would strengthen, rather than weaken, public confidence in the process. The new Electoral Reform Committee will carry out a full review of the NBA’s electoral framework. It is expected to consult broadly, invite submissions from members, and propose constitutional, institutional and technological changes aimed at making future elections more transparent, accessible, secure and auditable.
Badejo-Okusanya made clear that universal suffrage will remain in place, with the focus now on improving how it works. She invited her former rivals, Egbe Amofin O’odua, regional bar groups, local branches, past leaders, and lawyers of all ages to take part constructively in the reform effort.
She also warned against abusive campaign tactics, saying the association would respond quickly and publicly to lawyers who post insulting or demeaning comments about colleagues. Such cases will be referred to the relevant disciplinary bodies.
The announcement was issued by National Publicity Secretary Dr. Prince I. Azubuike.
