Argentine President Javier Milei has escalated the long-running dispute with Britain by announcing plans to sanction companies preparing to develop a major oil field near the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas.
In a national address from the presidential palace, Milei described the Sea Lion project as a “clear and present danger” to Argentina’s territorial claims. He said his government would introduce legislation targeting Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum, the firms expected to begin development of the field within two years.
The Sea Lion field lies about 130 miles from the islands and is estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil. Rockhopper has called the crude “highly marketable,” while Navitas has already started infrastructure work in the Falklands, including plans for a dock, heliport and worker accommodation.
In a joint statement the two companies said they did not expect the latest Argentine moves to have a material effect on the project or its timetable.
Milei insisted the islands are “historically and legally” Argentine territory and argued that oil extraction should not proceed while the sovereignty claim remains unresolved. He also accused the United Kingdom of acting against a United Nations resolution that urges both sides to avoid unilateral steps during the dispute.
The British government rejected the threats. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the UK’s position was “unwavering” and that sovereignty should reflect “the overwhelming position of the Islanders.” Defence Secretary Wes Streeting called Britain’s commitment “absolute and unshakeable,” adding that Milei’s statement “tells us more about domestic politics in Argentina than it does about the Falkland Islands.”
Downing Street reaffirmed that the islands would remain a British Overseas Territory “for as long as the Islanders wish,” noting that their right to self-determination includes the right to develop their own natural resources.
In a 2013 referendum, 99.8 percent of Falkland Islanders voted to remain under British sovereignty.
Milei also pointed to possible shifts in the United States’ traditional neutrality on the issue. He said President Donald Trump and Washington were “assessing their historical position,” describing Argentina as a reliable partner.
Trump had earlier indicated that the US stance on the Falklands was among several foreign-policy positions under review and remarked that the UK had “not been there to help me” in relation to the US conflict with Iran. Shortly before Milei’s speech, a senior US State Department official posted a photograph with the Argentine president and the caption “Exciting things are happening in the Western Hemisphere.”
The latest tensions come more than four decades after Argentina invaded the islands in 1982, prompting Britain to dispatch a military task force. The 74-day conflict left 255 British service personnel, three islanders and 649 Argentine military personnel dead.
Milei’s move also carries domestic weight. His popularity is reported to have fallen to around 34 percent ahead of Argentina’s next presidential election.
His former vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, a politician with strong military ties, has criticised his handling of the Falklands issue. By focusing on the immediate question of oil exploration rather than the wider sovereignty dispute, Milei appears to be seeking to rally support among Argentines who regard the claim as a core national matter.
Teslyn Barkman, a former member of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, said the speech had “probably irked every single Falkland islander.” Speaking from Stanley, she added: “We have a burgeoning economy for a small place… we will remain forever British.”
Argentina is expected to advance the proposed sanctions legislation. Rockhopper and Navitas have indicated they intend to continue with the Sea Lion development on the existing timetable. The British government has restated its support for the islanders’ right to self-determination, while any potential change in the US position remains unclear.
