The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has said a tanker intercepted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency with a large cannabis haul does not belong to it and is not part of its authorised operations.
NDLEA officers found 2,145 kilogrammes of cannabis hidden in a compartment of the vehicle in Ondo State. The truck carried markings linked to NNPC and was registered as MKA 960 XC.
In a statement on Monday, Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh said preliminary checks showed the vehicle was neither owned by NNPC Ltd. nor listed among its official fleet or those of its authorised dealers. The company also said the logo on the tanker did not match its current official branding and that the truck did not appear in its asset database.
NNPC said it had noted media reports of the seizure and commended the NDLEA for its vigilance. It is now contacting the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners for more information on how the company’s older branding came to be used on the vehicle.
“NNPC Ltd. takes any unauthorised use of its corporate identity seriously, particularly where such use may be associated with unlawful activity,” the company said.
It pledged full cooperation with the NDLEA and other security agencies to establish who owns and operates the truck and how the markings were applied. NNPC added that it is reviewing its brand-protection and asset-monitoring procedures and will consider legal action where necessary.
The company urged the public and relevant authorities to confirm any claimed link to NNPC through official channels, and restated its support for the NDLEA’s work against drug trafficking.
