A political pressure group pushing for Owerri senatorial zone to produce Imo State’s next governor has accused some forces within the All Progressives Congress in Orlu zone of opposing the arrangement.
Dr Emmanuel Okwu, president of the Owerri Zone Awareness Coalition, made the claim in a statement issued in Owerri on Saturday. He said a section of Orlu politicians is resisting the Charter of Equity, under which Owerri would take the governorship in 2027, followed by Okigwe and then Orlu.
Okwu argued that no zone should dominate the office indefinitely. Orlu, he said, has held the governorship for 24 years, while Owerri held it for four years and Okigwe for only seven months. “There are no political slaves in Imo State,” he stated. “One particular zone cannot continue to dominate, holding power for 24 years, while another one is just holding for four years and another one is just seven months.”
The group backs the rotation formula already endorsed by the Imo State Council of Elders and wants Owerri to begin the cycle. Okwu dismissed past mutual accusations between the zones over earlier elections, saying old grievances should not dictate the current debate. He also criticised Orluzurumee, the apex socio-cultural body of Orlu zone, for appearing to act as kingmaker in deciding Governor Hope Uzodimma’s successor.
He called on genuine leaders in Orlu and Okigwe to support an Owerri candidate in 2027 and not allow a minority opposed to the shift to define the zone’s position.
