A middle-aged man identified as Livingston Nwakanma has been arrested after allegedly hacking his mother to death with a machete in Osaa Ukwu community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
The victim, known as Daa Nwaigbe, was preparing food in the kitchen in the early hours when her son allegedly entered, knocked her down and inflicted a fatal cut on her neck. She collapsed and died at the scene.
A community source said Nwakanma had displayed troubling behaviour for more than four years. A woman who saw him wielding the machete raised the alarm and confronted him. The noise drew the victim’s husband to the kitchen. When the husband tried to intervene, Nwakanma allegedly turned on him; the man escaped and raised further alarm. Youths in the community later apprehended Nwakanma and handed him over to the police.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka confirmed that the Eastern Ngwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call. Officers arrived to find the woman lifeless. A medical professional confirmed her death and the body was taken to the morgue.
Chinaka said the suspect, who was about to be lynched by a mob, was rescued by police and taken to hospital for medical attention. He is now in police custody as investigation continues.
