Armed men suspected to be bandits have kidnapped several passengers from two commercial buses on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The attack occurred on Thursday morning around the Umunoha axis. According to a source who requested anonymity, the gunmen intercepted the vehicles as they travelled from Onitsha towards Owerri. The buses, believed to be returning from Lagos, had slowed because cattle were crossing the road.
The source said the attackers routinely strike at such moments, knowing traffic will be delayed. “The buses were coming from Onitsha side of the road; it seems they were returning from Lagos. Many people were kidnapped. They usually launch attacks when their cattle are crossing the road because they know vehicles will slow down,” the source stated.
The exact number of victims had not been confirmed at the time of the report. The incident adds to a pattern of recent kidnappings along the same route, where some hostages have been freed after ransom payments.
The source further claimed that a man and his daughter were abducted on the road about three weeks earlier and released after a N29 million ransom was paid. That account could not be independently verified.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Henry Okoye had not responded to enquiries about the latest abduction by the time of filing.
