Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has called on residents to take up household farming, presenting 1,000 families as the first beneficiaries of a new programme aimed at boosting food production and easing the impact of economic hardship.
The governor made the appeal on Tuesday at the Zero Hunger Agricultural Empowerment Programme held at Rockview Hotel in Owerri. He told the recipients that earlier government measures, including food distribution and cash support, had helped cushion hardship but could not replace sustained local production.
“It is like giving somebody fish. Now we want to teach you how to fish,” Uzodimma said, urging the beneficiaries to start planting at once.
He noted that home gardens were once a familiar feature of Imo communities, with families routinely growing vegetables, tomatoes and other crops around their houses. The governor also encouraged civil servants, young professionals and other residents to create their own gardens, arguing that greater local food output is essential for national progress.
“There is no way Nigeria will move if we don’t grow what we eat and eat what we grow,” he said.
Uzodimma congratulated the selected households and promised continued state support for measures that improve food security, reduce poverty and expand prosperity.
Chinenyenwa Owuamalam, Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, described the scheme as a practical step to strengthen household resilience. She said it would equip 1,000 families with agricultural inputs, training and home-gardening assistance, contributing to SDG 2 on Zero Hunger and SDG 17 on partnerships. Owuamalam also praised the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu for prioritising food security, agriculture, poverty reduction and economic empowerment under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Imo APC Chairman Austin Onyedebelu welcomed the empowerment of the 1,000 beneficiaries, saying the programme could raise food output, cut poverty and improve livelihoods through modern farming methods and high-yield seeds.
