Nigeria and the United States have agreed to deepen military cooperation, with specialised joint training for Special Forces, intelligence sharing and capacity building identified as top priorities.
Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa outlined the focus areas on Thursday in Abuja while receiving Major General Matthew Brown, commander of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF). The visit was intended to review existing joint security efforts and shape a more results-oriented framework for future collaboration.
Musa thanked the United States for its sustained partnership, saying collaborative operations in the North-East, particularly around the Lake Chad Basin, had significantly improved troop morale. He also called for enhanced border surveillance, counter-improvised explosive device support and modernisation of defence infrastructure to strengthen Nigeria’s local capacity.
Brown extended early Independence Day greetings to Nigeria and described the long-standing military-to-military relationship as strategic and rooted in mutual trust. He noted ongoing counter-terrorism work against ISIS-affiliated groups in Africa and praised the troops involved.
Addressing the recent departure of U.S. soldiers who formed part of the Combined Special Task Force in the Bauchi area, Brown stressed that American military activities in Nigeria remain temporary and centred on institutional support and collaboration. He said the primary purpose of his visit was to understand Nigeria’s defence priorities directly so the United States can better align its assistance, including continued intelligence sharing.
The discussions reaffirm both countries’ commitment to counter-terrorism operations as a shared security objective.
