The Department of State Services has arraigned a Kaduna man on charges of cybercrime and defamation for circulating a forged letter purportedly written by President Bola Tinubu to the President of the United States.
Mubarak Abdullahi, also known as Sardaunan Samari, was arrested on September 28 after sharing the document on his Facebook page with the caption “ATIKU IS COMING.” He was brought before Chief Magistrate Court No. 10 in Kabala Doki, Kaduna, which ordered his remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced the development in a post on X late Monday. He said Abdullahi, described as an avowed supporter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, admitted to investigators that he shared the fake document and apologised. The apology did not prevent the case from proceeding.
The DSS has filed a three-count charge against him at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. Onanuga said the agency would continue to identify those involved in circulating misleading information online.
Human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore condemned the arrest. In a post on X on Tuesday, he accused the DSS of being deployed to silence dissent and questioned why a national security agency was used against a citizen over an online post. “Arresting a hapless citizen for posting a document online – sad!” he wrote.
Neither Atiku Abubakar nor his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, had publicly responded to the matter as of the time of this report.
