A Lagos State police officer has been disarmed and detained after his firearm discharged during an operation to stop a violent clash, killing a young girl and injuring another in Ajegunle.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Omotayo Olajide was taken into custody following the incident on Thursday night, November 5, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the Nosamu area. Police had been deployed to quell fighting between two rival groups, the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys, who were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons in a dispute over toll collection.
According to a statement on Saturday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, Olajide discharged his firearm while officers worked to restore order. The bullet struck two girls. Both were rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital. Omole Taiwo was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where she was pronounced dead. The second child remains hospitalised in stable condition.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a full inquiry into the exact circumstances of the shooting and to determine any legal or disciplinary action. Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai visited the bereaved family to offer condolences. He assured them that justice would be served and that no officer found culpable would be shielded.
The command expressed sorrow over the loss of life and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability. It urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or the Public Relations Department.
