The All Progressives Congress national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, has said the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have recognised the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, declaring that Nigeria’s target of a $1 trillion economy is achievable.
Yilwatda made the remarks in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where President Tinubu attended a political rally at the Senator Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. In a statement issued on Friday by his special adviser on media and information strategy, Abimbola Tooki, the APC chairman said the reforms were laying the foundation for a stronger and more productive economy and that abandoning them would reverse progress on the country’s structural challenges.
He acknowledged that the measures had imposed difficult adjustments on Nigerians but insisted that sustaining them was essential for long-term stability. The $1 trillion economy target, he said, was not merely a political aspiration but a national development goal backed by deliberate policy choices and ongoing economic restructuring.
Yilwatda identified investments in infrastructure, transportation, education, maritime development and financial inclusion as central pillars of the administration’s agenda. He singled out the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a project that would improve connectivity, stimulate commercial activity and create economic opportunities for Akwa Ibom and other coastal communities. Developing the maritime sector, he added, would boost the competitiveness of coastal states and increase their contribution to national growth.
On social investment, he praised the student loan scheme for expanding access to higher education and noted that interventions targeting women and small businesses were broadening economic participation. Tax reforms, he said, were designed to ease the burden on low-income earners and small businesses so they could retain more of their earnings.
The APC chairman also listed improved industrial harmony in educational institutions and efforts to settle outstanding obligations to workers, pensioners and retirees of formerly privatised public enterprises as achievements of the administration.
Urging Nigerians to support the reform process, Yilwatda said: “Never again should Nigeria return to Egypt. We cannot afford to abandon the difficult but necessary work of rebuilding our economy and repositioning our country for sustainable growth.”
He maintained that the administration’s policies and investments were positioning Nigeria for long-term prosperity and greater economic competitiveness.
