FROM COURT TO CULT
[Dedicated to a Chairman and his cult boys
By Chinedu Agu
First to the court he went,
With suit upon suit,
Three times he knocked,
Three times he sought a route.
A hundred million hung in the air,
And questions followed him everywhere.
But questions are stubborn things,
They grow wings when denied their springs.
And so the court files grew in height,
While the money question remained in sight.
But lo! When court could not provide
The silence he had sought outside,
A new procession took the stage;
A different cast, a different age.
Saturday dawned, the NBA assembled,
The wigs were set, the gowns were trembled.
But where were briefs? Where was the law?
A strange new audience was what we saw!
Alleged cult boys, so the reports declare,
Had come to give dissenters quite a scare.
Ah, Mike Ahamba, SAN, arose;
Emeka Nwagwu, SAN, with him chose
To quit the scene, while Dec Madu
And Willie Opara said, “This will not do!”
Not fear, but disappointment marked their exit;
What a sad spectacle for men who had built it!
Three former Chairmen of the Owerri Bar,
And one former Secretary, each a legal star.
What bitter irony for the learned four
To find the Bar’s debate escorted to the door!
O Mazi, what a journey you have made!
From the court’s solemn halls to a different parade!
When the judge cannot be made to hush the crowd,
Must another audience be summoned aloud?
First the writ, then the boys in the hall;
First the sort-after injunction, then the muscle call!
What next, we ask, in this grand legal show?
A Supreme Court of masquerades, perhaps, to go?
But mark this well, ye custodians of the gown:
The law is not a throne to be guarded by a clan.
A suit may postpone, a threat may disturb,
But neither can make a question absurd.
A hundred million questions will not disappear
Because a louder congregation happens to appear.
For when the court gives way to the cult,
The Bar itself must bear the insult.
And when the wig must compete with the stick,
The tragedy is no longer merely comic.
From Court to Cult! What a fall from grace!
When arguments lose, strongmen take their place.
But truth has no bouncer, no gate and no guard;
It waits at the door, and it does not tire hard!
