OWERRI, Imo State — Dr. Leo Chikezie Igwe, director of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW), has removed an object described by locals as a buried charm from a landed property at Ishiuzo, Egbu, in Owerri North Local Government Area.
The property belongs to Mr. Donald Mgbeahuruike, who lives overseas. He had engaged Engineer Uche Opara to clear the site ahead of construction. Work was suspended after the object was discovered.
Igwe said a friend contacted him about three weeks earlier after relatives, including some who are religious, refused to handle the item. He agreed to remove it because the action aligned with AfAW’s work supporting people affected by witchcraft accusations and related fears.
“There was nothing powerful about the bottle that could harm workers or stop the development of the property. It took me less than three minutes to remove this thing that had stopped people from working here,” Igwe said.
He described such objects as tools used to intimidate people and stall progress. Igwe condemned the practice of planting or claiming to find charms on land, homes and businesses, saying it often leads to extortion by those who demand payment to “remove” them. Many people, he noted, abandon valuable projects out of fear of alleged witchcraft, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation.
Igwe urged the public to adopt critical thinking, reject belief in fetish objects and refuse to be ruled by fear so that development can continue.
Engineer Opara had kept his distance during the removal, citing concern that the object could harm anyone who touched it or worked on the site. Mgbeahuruike later thanked Igwe for his intervention, saying he had considered selling the property outright after the discovery.
