The Office of the Senate President has dismissed fresh allegations from former Senator Elisha Abbo, accusing him of spreading falsehoods and attempting to shift blame for his removal from the Senate.
In a statement on Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s spokesperson, Rt. Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, refuted Abbo’s claims, calling them “spurious and malicious.” He alleged that Abbo was merely trying to rewrite history to cover up his own failures.
Abbo, who represented Adamawa North before a judicial ruling nullified his election, had previously admitted in 2023 that his earlier accusations against Akpabio were “premature and based on available information.” Following discussions with the Senate President last year, he reportedly retracted his claims, acknowledging Akpabio’s non-involvement in the legal proceedings that led to his removal.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Court of Appeal, after a thorough legal review, ruled that Mr. Abbo’s presence in the Senate was in error,” the statement read. “The court determined that he was not validly elected as the Senator for Adamawa North, leading to his removal.”
The statement stressed that Akpabio, as a lawyer and democrat, respects judicial independence and does not interfere in court processes. It also criticized Abbo for reviving allegations he had previously withdrawn.
Addressing Abbo’s complaints about unpaid benefits, the Senate President’s office clarified that all financial and administrative approvals follow due process. “If any of Mr. Abbo’s claims for payment did not reach the Senate President’s desk, it is because they failed to meet lawful standards—not due to any personal or political vendetta,” the statement asserted.
Additionally, the response referenced Abbo’s public record, citing a 2019 incident in which he was caught on video assaulting a female citizen in Abuja—a case that resulted in a N50 million damages order against him.
The statement concluded by urging Abbo to take responsibility for his legal and political challenges rather than resorting to “media theatrics and reckless finger-pointing.” It reaffirmed Akpabio’s commitment to his legislative duties, stating that he would not be distracted by individuals attempting to “rewrite history to mask personal failures.”
