The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) branch, has declared an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare concerns.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the union’s chairman, Peter Adamu, and secretary, Peter Waziri, confirmed that the decision was approved by ASUU’s National Executive Council. The statement emphasized that the strike is “total, comprehensive, and indefinite”.
ASUU cited the Kaduna State government’s failure to provide concrete commitments on resolving outstanding entitlements. The union rejected the government’s promises, describing them as lacking substance, specific details, and actionable timelines.
Key grievances include the non-payment of withheld salaries, Earned Academic Allowances since 2016, promotion arrears, and supervision allowances for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme. The union also highlighted issues such as the non-remittance of pension contributions from 2009 to 2019, unpaid Group Life Assurance benefits for deceased members, and the non-implementation of 25% and 35% wage awards.
Additionally, ASUU is demanding the restoration of the university’s autonomy, which it considers a critical issue in the ongoing dispute.
