The Deputy Prime Minister of the United States of Biafra (USB), Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, has stated that the sustained Monday sit-at-home compliance in the South-East for over three years is a clear indication that the Igbo people are fed up with Nigeria.
The sit-at-home protest began three years ago following the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). While IPOB later called off the order, businesses and public activities across the South-East continue to shut down every Monday, reflecting strong adherence to the movement.
In a statement on her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Orabueze—who serves as the second-in-command to detained Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa—claimed that the continued observance of the protest has “legitimized the Ekpa-led Biafra government.”
She stated:
“The voluntary Monday sit-at-home, generally agreed upon by almost 98% of citizens, recorded a huge success today, February 3, 2025.
The sit-at-home has persisted for almost three years and serves as a referendum to delegitimize Nigeria in Biafra territory while legitimizing Biafra and its citizens.”
Orabueze further declared that the protest would continue indefinitely until the following demands are met:
•The release of Nnamdi Kanu, who was rearrested by the Nigerian government in June 2021.
•The release of Simon Ekpa, who was arrested by Finnish authorities in November 2024.
•Complete security for Biafraland.
Allegations of Human Rights Violations
Orabueze also accused the Nigerian government of “mass killings in Biafraland”, calling on the international community to intervene.
The United States of Biafra (USB) and other pro-Biafra groups have continued to advocate for the separation of the South-East from Nigeria, despite crackdowns by security forces and IPOB’s proscription as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government.
