A violent confrontation has erupted between Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), just two weeks after a failed reconciliation effort. The latest clash took place in Abadam Local Government Area, Borno State, an area long plagued by hostilities between the two groups.
Counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama reported that the battle occurred on Friday, February 14, 2025, near ISWAP strongholds in the Toumbun Gini and Toumbun Ali villages within the Lake Chad Basin. According to Makama, ISWAP suffered heavy casualties during the water-based confrontation. He also cautioned that the violence could spread to Kukawa Local Government Area, where Boko Haram fighters remain active against ISWAP.
The rivalry between Boko Haram and ISWAP dates back to 2016 when ISWAP split from Boko Haram and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS). The division stemmed from ideological disagreements, particularly regarding the leadership of Abubakar Shekau, the former Boko Haram leader who had sworn allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Some senior Boko Haram figures, including Habib Yusuf, son of the group’s founder Mohammed Yusuf, opposed Shekau’s leadership and formed ISWAP.
Since then, both factions have engaged in continuous violent clashes, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin, as they vie for control over territory and influence.
