The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed on Monday before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, despite an ongoing dispute over her earlier decision to step down from the case.
Kanu’s trial had stalled on September 24, 2024, after he openly expressed a loss of confidence in Justice Nyako’s handling of the matter, prompting her to recuse herself. However, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, later reassigned the case to her, ruling that any request for her withdrawal must be formally filed through a motion on notice.
During Monday’s proceedings, Justice Nyako emphasized that her recusal had not been officially accepted by the Chief Judge. She advised Kanu’s legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, to submit a formal application if they still sought her withdrawal from the case.
