The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches across the country to unite against alleged attempts to Islamise Nigeria.
The Chairman of CAN in Akwa Ibom State, Bishop Chris Nyong, made this appeal over the weekend during a courtesy visit from the College of Bishops, a branch of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star.
Nyong expressed concerns over what he described as a deliberate effort to turn Nigeria into a Muslim nation, citing historical examples where predominantly Christian countries, such as Turkey and Morocco, had undergone similar transformations.
“It is crucial for all followers of Jesus Christ to stand together against these moves by certain power groups. Nigeria is a secular state and must remain so,” he said.
He also noted that His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star had long been advocating against such alleged efforts, urging Christians to unite in resistance.
“Every individual has the fundamental right to worship freely. The Christian community in Nigeria must work together to promote love, peace, and national unity,” Nyong added.
He further advised Christians to avoid division, hatred, and factionalism.
In response, the Dean of the BCS College of Bishops, The Patriarch, Shepherd Bassey Imowo, commended CAN for its efforts in strengthening Christianity. He urged Christians to embrace love and forgiveness, emphasizing that love remains the ultimate force in overcoming challenges.
