ABUJA- The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned ongoing calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), warning that political figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, should be held accountable for supporting his freedom.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG accused IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of orchestrating violent attacks on security forces, government institutions, and civilians. The group alleged that IPOB’s activities have resulted in the deaths of 175 security personnel and the destruction of public infrastructure, including police stations and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices.
CNG criticized Kanu’s courtroom conduct, alleging that his remarks against the judiciary and prosecution showed a blatant disregard for the legal system. The group insisted that his rhetoric incites violence and undermines national unity.
The coalition also accused Peter Obi of prioritizing ethnic interests by advocating for Kanu’s release, warning northern voters against supporting politicians aligned with IPOB. It argued that such alliances ignore the suffering caused by IPOB’s activities, particularly in the North.
Reiterating its stance, CNG urged international bodies to facilitate a peaceful separation of the South-East from Nigeria, claiming that IPOB’s secessionist agitation threatens national stability. The group insisted that Kanu must face justice and that any unconditional release would embolden separatist movements and weaken national security.
“The demand for Kanu’s release by Igbo leaders and elites is insensitive to the victims of IPOB’s violence,” the statement read. “Any Igbo leader advocating for his unconditional release should be treated as a terrorist and complicit in the crimes committed”.
CNG further warned that releasing Kanu without due process would demoralize security personnel combating IPOB’s threats and set a dangerous precedent. The coalition urged the government to resist any pressure to release him and instead ensure that he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
