Singer D4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, is now represented by the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office after his high-profile private attorneys withdrew from the case. The 21-year-old musician appeared in a Los Angeles court on Monday and entered not-guilty pleas to charges linked to the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.
Hernandez’s remains were discovered in September 2025 inside a Tesla connected to an address associated with Burke. Prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder, mutilation of human remains and child sexual abuse. The murder count includes a special circumstance allegation of financial gain, which could expose him to the death penalty if he is convicted.
Burke had been represented by celebrity defense attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter. The court granted their request to step aside and appointed the public defender’s office. In a statement, the departing lawyers said Burke qualified for appointed counsel and that they remain supportive of his defense.
“We continue to support David and his defence against these serious charges,” they said. “We are grateful that the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office has taken over the representation and that David has a highly capable and committed team of attorneys and investigators behind him.”
Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel stated that Burke is entitled to a thorough examination of the evidence. “David is entitled to a defence that takes his circumstances seriously and carefully examines the evidence,” Kandeel said. “We are committed to providing him with that defence.”
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said prosecutors are ready to move forward but acknowledged that the new defense team may need extra time to review the case. He also noted the change could prompt a motion seeking dismissal.
Prosecutors contend that Burke sexually abused Hernandez over a period of years, then stabbed and dismembered her after she threatened to expose their relationship and harm his music career. They allege she traveled to his Hollywood residence in an Uber he arranged and was killed after she arrived.
Messages reportedly sent by Hernandez in April 2025, following an argument about another girl, included a threat to kill Burke and damage his career. A judge ruled last month that sufficient evidence exists for Burke to stand trial on the murder charge.
Berk, who headed the previous defense team, has previously represented high-profile clients including Mel Gibson, Harvey Weinstein, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.
Burke’s next pre-trial hearing is set for October 19. He remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
