The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration over the alleged neglect of key infrastructural projects in Ijaw communities.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the APC expressed its support for the Ijaw Youth Council’s agitations, condemning what it described as systematic sidelining of riverine areas in infrastructure development.
“It is unacceptable that in this day and age, our communities continue to suffer severe infrastructural deficits while the state government remains indifferent to their plight”, the party stated.
The APC noted that despite the creation of the Directorate of Riverine Development, there has been little to no progress in addressing the needs of Ijaw communities. It pointed to several critical infrastructure projects that remain abandoned, including:
Ayakoromo Bridge
Burutu Marine Polytechnic
Key road projects in Ogulagha/Odimodi, Ohoroh/Bomadi, Torugbene/Ojobo, and Erhowa/Abari
The party also criticized the failure of the administration to upgrade the Isena-Ibe Teachers Training College, Bomadi, to a polytechnic or university, calling it a clear indication of the government’s lack of commitment to education and skill acquisition in riverine areas.
“The deplorable conditions of roads in these communities are not just an inconvenience but a serious threat to the economic survival, safety, and well-being of the people,” the APC stated.
The opposition party urged Governor Oborevwori to prioritize the completion and funding of these projects, stressing that Ijaw communities deserve more than unfulfilled promises and abandoned developments.
”It is time for Governor Oborevwori to stop paying lip service to the development of riverine communities and take meaningful action. The Directorate of Riverine Development must not be a mere political tool for rewarding loyalists but should serve as a real catalyst for sustainable development”, the statement read.
The Delta APC reaffirmed its support for the Ijaw Youth Council and other riverine stakeholders, demanding that the Oborevwori administration deliver on its promises and provide the much-needed infrastructure to drive economic growth and social progress.
The time for action is now-Delta Ijaw and other riverine communities deserve better, the party declared.
