Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to enhance security and development in the South-East region.
Kalu made this appeal on Wednesday after the inaugural meeting of the House Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) at the National Assembly in Abuja. He emphasized that Kanu’s release would address security challenges and promote development initiatives in the region.
“We are appealing to him to temper justice with mercy and release Nnamdi Kanu to southeast people. It will ensure more security for our people and spring up development that this SEDC is going to bring”, Kalu stated.
He also noted that President Tinubu has demonstrated commitment to the South-East by promptly signing the South-East Development Commission Bill into law, a move that had not been achieved in previous administrations. Kalu suggested that adopting a political approach, rather than a legal one, would be more effective in resolving the region’s challenges.
“Those who are using him as excuses to perpetrate all these criminal actions around our area will have no other reason to be on the street. Then the police and security agencies will catch anyone who claims Nnamdi Kanu is the reason for causing harm to the people of South-East”, he added
Kalu concluded by expressing optimism that President Tinubu would consider this appeal, highlighting that Kanu’s release could lead to reduced insecurity and foster development in the South-East.
