Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, a Catholic missionary priest serving in The Gambia, has alleged that many Nigerian churches have incorporated juju practices into their religious activities.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Fr. Kelvin claimed that the majority of people who consult native doctors or believe in juju are the same ones who attend church services every Sunday. According to him, this has led to traditional spiritual practices being repackaged as Christian rituals.
He specifically mentioned Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, accusing him of engaging in juju-like practices, including the sale of water and oil for miracles.
“More than 90% of everything Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin does, including selling water and oil, are juju practices,” he stated.
Fr. Kelvin listed several religious activities he believes are rooted in juju traditions, including:
Placing a partner’s picture on the altar at Shiloh to force a marriage -This is a juju practice.
Prophet Odumeje pouring seven bottles of Goya oil to cleanse a new house -This is a juju practice.
“Miracle bank alerts”, where money mysteriously appears in a person’s account -That is juju, not Christianity.
Praying for an enemy’s death due to jealousy or hatred – This is juju, not faith.
Catholics venerating religious images to the extent of worshipping them -That is a form of juju.
Churches selling overpriced items like apples, candles, or handkerchiefs with promises of wealth or fertility -This is nothing but juju repackaged as religion.
The priest argued that the issue is not Christianity itself but the deep-seated juju mentality that many Nigerians bring into their faith.
The version of Christianity practiced in many parts of Africa is just an upgraded version of juju and witchcraft,” he said.
Challenging the authenticity of juju, he added:
If juju really works, stop speaking grammar, just disappear and appear at my location. Or command something in my body to go missing. Mtchwwww!
Fr. Kelvin’s remarks have sparked debates, with some supporting his views while others see them as an attack on certain religious leaders and practices.
