Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, to work closely with his administration in combating pipeline vandalism and economic sabotage in the state.
Speaking on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by Emekah and his delegation to Government House, Port Harcourt, Fubara stressed the need for cooperation in addressing security challenges, particularly in oil-producing communities.
“Our task today is becoming more complex due to individuals who have chosen to be a problem to this country,” Fubara said. “Pipeline vandalism, destruction of gas infrastructure, and even the deliberate incitement of community crises in oil-producing areas have become major concerns. We must work together to address these issues.”
He urged the GOC to reach out whenever military intervention required government support, particularly in matters of chieftaincy and community relations, which fall under the state’s jurisdiction.
“As a government, we have mechanisms to address these conflicts. Where you need us, reach out, and we will collaborate to restore peace and ensure smooth operations,” he added.
Fubara emphasized the importance of protecting critical national infrastructure in Rivers, describing the state as the “Treasure Base of the Nation” and a key contributor to Nigeria’s economy.
The governor also expressed displeasure over the absence of the previous GOC, noting that while the Chief of Army Staff had visited before his untimely passing, the former GOC failed to establish an official relationship with the state government.
“I’m pleased with your visit because it signifies a change in command and a fresh start. This is a normal military protocol, but it also reassures us that we have a shared interest in security and development,” he stated.
Fubara assured Emekah of his administration’s full support and commended officers of the 6 Division for their efforts in maintaining peace in Rivers State.
In his remarks, Major General Emekah described the visit as a customary military practice and acknowledged that he took over command three weeks ago.
He reaffirmed the army’s commitment to protecting critical infrastructure in the maritime and oil sector while ensuring security across the South-South region, excluding Cross River and Edo states.
