The Igbo Community Association (FCT) has called on Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, to issue a public apology to former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, for verbally attacking her during a National Assembly session.
In a statement released on Thursday, the association’s President-General, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, condemned the senator’s remarks and warned that the group would stage a protest if he failed to apologize.
“It is deeply embarrassing to witness Senator Nwebonyi publicly disparage a woman who is widely respected as an Amazon by Nigerians, particularly in the Igbo-speaking regions,” the statement read.
The group further criticized the senator’s actions, especially as they occurred during a hearing on Senator Natasha Uduaghan’s sexual harassment allegations.
“This incident reflects a broader lack of respect for women in the Senate, a chamber dominated by men,” the statement continued. “Senator Nwebonyi should be sanctioned and recognized for what he is—an embarrassment to the Red Chamber and to Igbo men.”
The association demanded that Nwebonyi publicly apologize to both Ezekwesili and the Igbo nation.
“We, Igbos in Abuja, demand a public apology, or we will take action. Oby Ezekwesili has served Nigeria with distinction and does not deserve such disgraceful treatment.”
The group also urged the Senate to sanction Nwebonyi and pledged to organize a large-scale protest against the mistreatment of women in the legislative body.
