At least 50 people narrowly escaped death on Tuesday following a gunpowder explosion at a market in Talata-Mafara, Zamfara State.
Several victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were initially rushed to the General Hospital, Talata-Mafara, before being transferred to Usman Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, due to inadequate medical facilities.
A medical worker at the Talata-Mafara hospital confirmed that the injuries were severe, necessitating their evacuation to Sokoto for advanced treatment.
A local source revealed that the explosion was triggered when a locally made gun accidentally discharged, igniting a powdered substance sold for traditional gun users. The source explained that a vigilante member had come to purchase the substance when his gun suddenly went off, sparking a fire that engulfed the area.
Chairman of Talata-Mafara Local Government Area, Yahaya Yari, who accompanied the victims to Sokoto, confirmed the incident but declined further comments.
Efforts to reach ASP Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
