The Nigerian House of Representatives has congratulated Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her election and swearing-in as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association, describing the development as a historic milestone for the legal profession and for women in leadership.
In a statement released on 4 September 2026 and signed by House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the legislature also extended its best wishes to the newly elected national officers and representatives of the NBA following the 2026 elections.
The House noted that Badejo-Okusanya is the first woman to head the association in 35 years and the first elected female president of one of Africa’s largest and most influential bar associations. It further highlighted that six of the ten members of the new NBA National Executive are women, a development it described as strong representation at the highest level of the body.
Her background as an arbitrator and public-policy professional with more than 20 years’ experience was also acknowledged, including her membership of the National Assembly Business Environment Roundtable (NASSBER).
Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Rep. Mamudu Abdullahi (APC, Niger), expressed confidence in her leadership. Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Rep. Olumide Osoba (APC, Ogun), particularly welcomed her stated view that the NBA must engage constructively with government, civil society, development partners and the private sector while remaining committed to its principles.
The House said it was encouraged by her vision of a “bolder, inclusive, innovative and respected Bar” that works for every lawyer and reclaims its place as a credible voice for justice, democracy and the rule of law.
The statement placed the election in the wider context of growing female leadership across the Bench, the Bar and legal education. It linked the development to the 10th Assembly’s Legislative Agenda, specifically Agenda 3 on Law Reform under Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and reaffirmed the House’s commitment to constructive engagement with the NBA on legal and institutional reform.
The legislature also acknowledged the work of the outgoing NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and his National Executive Council over the past two years.
The House said it looks forward to deeper collaboration with the new NBA leadership on justice administration and institutional reform, and wished Badejo-Okusanya and her team a successful tenure.
