Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), has expressed hope that the killers of renowned journalist Dele Giwa, who was assassinated on October 19, 1986, will be identified in his lifetime.
IBB made this revelation in his recently launched book, A Journey in Service, where he described Giwa as a good friend and acknowledged the shock his murder caused both personally and nationally.
Reflecting on Giwa’s impact, Babangida wrote:
“Giwa was loved by his audience and the public. Targeting him would shock the nation and portray my administration in a weak light.”
He reiterated that he had no hand in Giwa’s killing, arguing that whoever orchestrated the assassination must have known about his close relationship with the journalist and other senior media figures.
“Whoever was the mastermind knew my relationship with Giwa and a few senior journalists. Hitting at Giwa would get to me emotionally,” he stated.
Babangida believes history will eventually vindicate him once the real culprits are exposed, whether during his lifetime or beyond.
“The Giwa case, like all mysterious murders, has remained unsolved for decades. I keep hoping the truth will be uncovered in our lifetime or after us. More often than not, mysterious crimes are solved long after they occur.
The book launch, held in Abuja, was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and other prominent former heads of state.
Earlier, DAILY POST had reported Babangida’s repeated denials of any involvement in Giwa’s assassination, which was carried out using a parcel bomb, a rare and shocking method of attack in Nigeria’s history.
