The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strict warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force against carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti) and engaging in human rights violations.
In a statement released on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the directive was given during a virtual meeting between the IGP and senior police officers at the Force Headquarters.
Egbetokun expressed concern over the rising number of complaints received through the police’s official complaint channels regarding human rights abuses. He emphasized that such misconduct would no longer be tolerated and warned officers that any violations would attract severe consequences.
“No operative should be seen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire. All tactical squads must adhere strictly to standard operating procedures and wear their designated uniforms at all times,” IGP stated.
The police chief also condemned the unauthorized transfer of cases without his written approval, calling the practice is highly prohibited and warning that it would no longer be tolerated.
“Such actions impose unnecessary burdens on the parties involved and lead to delays in justice,” Adejobi added.
The IGP concluded by directing all officers, regardless of rank, to work collaboratively in upholding professionalism and ensuring that no misconduct tarnishes the reputation of the Force.
