A lawyer representing the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation has called indigenous Yoruba religion advocate Abdulazeez Adegbola, known as Tani Olohun, and Yoruba Nation campaigner Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho, “criminals” for allegedly interfering with a police operation to arrest Tani Olohun in Ibadan. The remarks came as a related court matter was adjourned to 15 September 2026 for hearing of a preliminary objection.
Speaking in a video about Tuesday’s proceedings, the lawyer said the foundation urged the court not to consider Tani Olohun’s preliminary objection because he and others had defied an existing court order for his arrest.
“We told the court not to hear them because the criminal (Tani Olohun) the court ordered his arrest has breached the court’s order alongside his co-criminals like Sunday Igboho,” the lawyer stated. “They have breached the court ruling and so the court must not hear them. However, the court said he would give them the right to be heard.”
The parties later agreed on 15 September 2026 as the date for the objection hearing. The lawyer also warned supporters of Tani Olohun in Ilorin that the foundation would “defeat them all together.”
The comments follow an 25 August attempt by officers from the Kwara State Police Command to execute a warrant of arrest issued by the Upper Area Court, Ilorin (Case No. UACW/CVF/79/2026) against Tani Olohun in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement dated 31 August and signed by General Secretary A.A. Abolaji Ajasa, Esq., the foundation alleged that Tani Olohun, relatives Ridwan and Ibrahim Adegbola, and Igboho obstructed the officers. It claimed the group called the police “bandits,” “kidnappers,” and “Sharia Police” despite the presentation of identification and the warrant, and that after Tani Olohun was briefly detained, the others secured his release. The foundation said the episode was streamed live on Tani Olohun’s Facebook page and called for police investigation of the alleged obstruction and the roles of those involved. It also questioned the Oyo State Commissioner of Police’s reported direction that Tani Olohun remain in his community and be released to Igboho rather than handed over under the warrant.
The foundation defended the legality of executing the warrant outside Kwara State, citing relevant provisions of the Sheriffs and Civil Process Act, and argued that questions of jurisdiction belong to the courts.
Tani Olohun has denied that Igboho obstructed the arrest. In a separate video, he said Igboho arrived after a confrontation between police and residents had already lasted about 30 minutes and intervened only to prevent further escalation. He claimed officers from Kwara attempted the arrest without giving him a chance to speak and that Igboho contacted senior officers in both Oyo and Kwara during the incident.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the officers were from Kwara and were acting on a warrant linked to allegations of conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace. The command said the warrant followed Tani Olohun’s alleged failure to meet bail conditions. The Oyo commissioner directed the Kwara officers to return to their state and advised the complainant to pursue the matter in an appropriate court in Ibadan.
The underlying dispute arises from a complaint by the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation over a social media video by Tani Olohun that the organisation said mocked an Islamic prayer and risked inflaming religious tension. The case remains before the Upper Area Court II, Ilorin Judicial Division.
The court is scheduled to hear Tani Olohun’s preliminary objection on 15 September 2026. The foundation continues to press for investigations into the failed arrest and related allegations.
