Detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has formally withdrawn the authority of longtime lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor to represent him, his family or the group, according to a letter dated 22 July 2026 that surfaced this week.
The letter, purportedly written from Sokoto Correctional Centre and shared on Facebook by APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe, states that Ejiofor’s engagement had already been ended verbally and that the correspondence serves as written confirmation. Kanu also revoked any express, implied or ostensible authority for Ejiofor to act on behalf of IPOB.
Citing Section II, Subsection A of the IPOB Code of Conduct, Kanu asserted that only the IPOB leader holds the power to appoint, suspend or dismiss principal officers unless that power is expressly delegated. He directed Ejiofor to stop making public statements, granting interviews, issuing press releases or posting on social media about him, his family or IPOB; to cease presenting himself as their legal representative in any court or forum; and to withdraw from any pending matters in which he remains counsel on record. Kanu further warned against any unauthorised disclosure of privileged information obtained during the professional relationship, noting that such conduct could attract disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
Ejiofor rejected the suggestion of a recent sacking. In a signed statement posted on his Facebook page, he said he voluntarily ended his personal representation of Kanu in December 2023, well before Kanu’s conviction and life sentence. He maintained that his firm continued to act as solicitors for IPOB and, between December 2023 and 2025, secured the discharge and acquittal of more than 200 alleged IPOB members in cases before the Federal High Court in Abuja and the High Courts of Ebonyi and Abia states.
Ejiofor argued that Kanu never personally appointed him as IPOB solicitor; the mandate arose independently of his former role as private counsel. He said IPOB had reaffirmed his position and that the professional relationship rested on a continuing mandate that could not be altered retrospectively by former leaders. He also questioned the letter’s authenticity, noting that under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, communications from inmates must carry authentication by the officer in charge of the facility, and urged the media and public to verify such documents before relying on them.
