The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to expedite the implementation of the Light-Up Lagos project while also setting up a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate the N24 billion initiative.
The project, aimed at deploying street-lighting infrastructure across the state, has raised concerns over the continued darkness on many roads despite significant budget allocations.
During a plenary session on Monday, Olumoh Saad (Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency 1) raised the issue under the Matter of Urgent Public Importance, highlighting the security risks and public safety concerns caused by non-functional streetlights.
He urged the governor to accelerate the contract awards for the project as outlined in the 2025 budget and ensure the Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources takes immediate action to restore faulty streetlights.
“Lagosians are complaining that since the streetlights are not functioning, we need to be up and running and do something about it,” Olumoh said. “We’re are also mindful of the fact that we need to explore other alternatives for sourcing energy, especially for this streetlight issue”.
Olumoh also called on local government chairmen to fulfill their constitutional duty by providing streetlights on local government roads. He stressed the need to explore alternative energy sources, particularly solar power, which has been successfully deployed on the Third Mainland Bridge by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The ad hoc investigative committee is expected to assess the project’s execution, funding, and reasons behind the continued lack of functional streetlights across Lagos.
