The Nigerian military has described the recent Court of Appeal ruling affirming the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group as a significant morale booster for troops.
According to the military high command, the ruling reinforces the government’s stance on national security and will encourage intensified operations to dismantle IPOB and its affiliates.
A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, led by Justice Hamma Barka, reaffirmed IPOB’s proscription and designation as a terrorist organization. The group, which advocates for an independent state of Biafra, was first proscribed in 2017 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The Federal High Court in Abuja subsequently classified IPOB as a terrorist organization.
Despite legal challenges by IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, a State High Court in Enugu overturned the proscription in October 2023. However, the latest Court of Appeal ruling reinstates the group’s terrorist designation.
In an exclusive interview with Weekend Trust, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Edward Buba, welcomed the ruling, describing it as a major boost for military operations.
“The armed forces applaud the recent Appeal Court ruling affirming IPOB’s designation as a terrorist group,” Buba stated.
“This judgment is a welcome development that further motivates troops to intensify actions aimed at dismantling the IPOB terror group and their Eastern Security Network (ESN) affiliates,” he added.
With the ruling now in place, the military has vowed to escalate its efforts to neutralize IPOB’s activities across the country.
