Abuja — The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has extended formal invitations to the European Union (EU), the United States Embassy, the British High Commission, Yiaga Africa, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), and other credible international and domestic election observers to monitor its upcoming National Officers’ Elections.
In letters signed by NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the Association invited the observers to the polls scheduled for Saturday, 18 July 2026. The move underscores the NBA’s commitment to transparency, credibility, and the highest standards of democratic conduct within the legal profession.
The elections will be conducted electronically, with accredited observers granted access to monitor proceedings from the Central Election Control Room at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja. From there, they will be able to observe election management, technical operations, results collation, and the final declaration of results.
“The presence of respected international and domestic observers will enhance public and member confidence in the credibility of the elections,” the NBA stated.
The Association, described as Africa’s largest professional body of lawyers, has a long-standing reputation for defending constitutional democracy, the rule of law,
and institutional independence.
The invitations come amid reported attempts by external interests to interfere in the electoral process, including efforts to secure directives for the postponement of the elections and the imposition of conditions not provided for in the NBA Constitution.
The Association described such moves as “unprecedented” and reaffirmed its determination to conduct the polls strictly in accordance with its Constitution and the guidelines of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA).
By opening the process to scrutiny from bodies with proven track records in election observation and democratic governance, the NBA aims to set a leading example of institutional autonomy and electoral integrity within professional associations in Nigeria.
The development is expected to boost stakeholder confidence and provide independent validation of the electoral outcome.
