A Nigerian Bar Association delegation, joined by relatives of Anthony Obodo, met the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on Monday, 31 August 2026, to demand a full investigation into Obodo’s death four days earlier. Obodo, who was shot by Nigerian Police Force officers, died on Thursday, 27 August 2026, under circumstances that have raised concern among his family and the public.
The group included NBA National Publicity Secretary Dr. Prince I. Azubuike, Port Harcourt Branch Chairman Dr. Chinedu Maduba, other branch executive members, and members of the Obodo family. They first met the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department before seeing the Commissioner of Police.
They outlined five requests: that the circumstances of the death be brought formally to the Commissioner’s attention; that a thorough investigation be conducted; that justice and accountability follow if any wrongdoing is established; that the command reassure the family and public that every effort would be made to secure justice; and that regular updates on the investigation be provided.
The Commissioner acknowledged the concerns and stated that the matter would receive appropriate attention. He undertook that the Police Command would take the steps needed to establish the facts. The delegation stressed that the inquiry must be professional and free of bias, given its impact on the family and the wider community.
At the close of the meeting, the police officers said to have been directly involved were brought before the visitors. The Commissioner confirmed that an Orderly Room Trial would begin at once and that the command would act on the findings of the investigation.
The visit was arranged after Obodo’s death on 27 August generated public and family concern. The NBA team described the engagement as a successful effort to place the issues directly before the state police leadership.

The Orderly Room Trial of the officers is expected to start immediately. The Police Command has pledged to examine the case and take action based on the results. The NBA delegation urged the bereaved family to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work.
