Senior officers of the Nigerian Bar Association visited the family of Anthony Obodo in Port Harcourt on Sunday, 30 August 2026, offering condolences and pledging to monitor the investigation into his death.
Obodo, 22, a Computer Science graduate of the University of Port Harcourt who was awaiting his National Youth Service Corps posting, died from gunshot injuries in an incident involving police officers in the city. The association described the death as extra-judicial.

The visit was ordered by NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN. The delegation was led by Second Vice President Nuhu Egya and Third Vice President Iniobong Irene Pepple. They were joined by Port Harcourt Branch Chairman Owele Chinedu Maduba and other branch leaders. The incident fell within the East region under Pepple’s vice-presidential oversight.
The officials met Obodo’s parents, Hon. PrinceWill Obodo and Mrs. Beatrice Obodo, and other relatives.
Speaking for the delegation, Egya conveyed the president’s condolences and those of the wider association. He said the NBA stood with the family and would remain engaged with the investigation and any later proceedings. He insisted the circumstances of the death must be fully examined and that the case must not be ignored. The association restated its opposition to extra-judicial killings, police brutality and unlawful use of force.
The NBA said officers charged with protecting lives and property must act within the law. Where a life is taken unlawfully, it added, there must be a credible investigation, accountability and justice.
The family told the visitors that police planned to parade a suspect on Monday, 31 August. The association said it would attend in significant numbers to observe the process.
In a statement, National Publicity Secretary Dr. Prince I. Azubuike said the NBA would continue to follow the investigation and subsequent steps to ensure due process. The visit, he said, showed the association’s commitment to human rights, the rule of law and a prompt response by national and branch leadership to serious violations in the communities they serve.
The association said it would keep engaging the relevant authorities as the matter proceeds.
