The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the country reached a record-high electricity generation of 5,801.84 megawatts as of Tuesday, marking the highest output in Nigeria’s history.
However, this declaration has been met with skepticism, as many Nigerians continue to suffer from widespread power outages.
Speaking at the State House on Thursday, TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, described the milestone as “unprecedented,” stating that the company successfully transmitted all generated power. He also revealed that TCN aims to expand transmission capacity to 10,000MW within the next two years, though he did not specify how this target would be achieved.
Data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) showed that in February 2025, the average available generation capacity stood at 5,432MW—signaling only a marginal increase despite the government’s investment in the sector.
While the government hails the achievement, many Nigerians continue to grapple with inadequate electricity supply, particularly during the ongoing heatwave.
Criticizing the TCN’s announcement, Princewill Okorie, Executive Director of the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy, described the celebration as “a display of failure and inefficiency.”
“They are celebrating failure. Nigerians are still in darkness, yet TCN is praising itself. A generation capacity of 5,801.84MW for over 200 million people is shameful—it is not an achievement,” Okorie stated.
Similarly, Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, argued that the increase in generation capacity has not translated to better power supply for consumers.
“While the record is commendable, it has no tangible value unless end-users experience real improvement. Despite huge post-privatization investments, Nigerians are yet to benefit,” he said.
As citizens continue to endure unreliable power supply, questions remain over the effectiveness of government policies and investments in the electricity sector.
