The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces neutralized 217 terrorists and apprehended 574 others during internal security operations in February.
Maj-Gen. Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja, detailing military efforts across the country.
According to Kangye, troops also rescued 320 hostages, while 152 Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters and their families surrendered. Additionally, the military recovered 296 assorted weapons and 7,245 rounds of ammunition.
The recovered weapons included:
1. 159 AK-47 rifles
2. 54 locally fabricated guns
3. 36 dane guns
4. 19 pump-action guns
5. 4,836 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition
6. 1,506 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition
7. 235 cartridges
8. 28 assorted arms and 668 assorted ammunition
The military conducted joint operations alongside the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), other security agencies, and hybrid forces. These operations included raids, ambushes, clearances, search-and-rescue missions, and counter-terrorism patrols.
“In the course of these operations, several terrorists were neutralized, their collaborators apprehended, kidnapped victims rescued, and surrendered terrorists received,” Kangye stated.
The military also cracked down on oil theft, preventing the loss of approximately N2.1 billion in stolen crude oil. Troops arrested 122 oil theft suspects and recovered:
1. 1.7 million litres of stolen crude oil
2. 402,936 litres of illegally refined diesel (AGO)
3. 600 litres of kerosene (DPK)
All suspects, recovered items, and rescued hostages have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further action.
Kangye attributed these successes to the tireless efforts of troops deployed in conflict zones and reassured the public that the military remains committed to protecting lives and property across Nigeria.
