Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed confidence that he will be granted bail by the end of April 2025, marking four years since his detention.
Kanu shared his optimism during a visit from the President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) in Abuja, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility where he is being held.
Following the visit, Ezenekwe issued a statement highlighting Kanu’s concerns over what he described as a leadership vacuum within the Igbo community. He lamented the lack of strong advocacy for his release and urged renewed efforts to push for the region’s interests.
Despite his prolonged detention, Ezenekwe noted that Kanu appeared in good spirits, had gained weight, and remained steadfast in his convictions.
During their discussion, Kanu reiterated his call for a referendum as a path to self-determination. He maintained that his only “offense” was awakening the consciousness of his people and reaffirmed his belief that he had committed no crime.
“Kanu remains resolute, taking his prescribed medications and staying in high spirits,” Ezenekwe said. “He is confident in his legal team and hopeful for his release in April, seeing it as a testament to his resilience and dedication.”
Ezenekwe used the opportunity to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to facilitate Kanu’s release, arguing that such a move would reinforce the government’s commitment to justice and democratic principles.
“In light of this encounter, I make a heartfelt appeal to President Tinubu,” he stated. “Let this be a defining moment to reaffirm the values of democracy and justice by securing the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu.”
He further called for renewed unity and determination among Igbos to safeguard their rights, dignity, and future in Nigeria.
